Dubh Prais
For many this is their first introduction to Scottish 'black pot'cooking and just to make the point the black pot itself is sat in a corner of this small and attractive Edinburgh basement. Many of the wonderful natural ingredients that exist in Scotland feature regularly on the menu, invoking some of the finest national dishes and taking the uninitiated well beyond the haggis and black pudding.

Empires
"Small, round and perfectly formed" is a description that can be applied in many areas, but I do not recall seeing it in association with a restaurant before. That was until Empires came along. Located in the Old Town, always a plus point for many, this tiny Turkish café's main stock in trade is the sort of cooking that one identifies with hearth and home.

First Coast
Neighbourhood restaurants seem to be on the growth these days, very good news too. Even better news when they are categorised as bistros, implying an even greater ease of ambience. In Europe they know all about neighbourhood restaurants, perhaps this is one of the more tangible benefits of EU membership? In talking to chefs the world over one of the things I want to know is where do they eat on their night off? Their answers are often my next port of call.

Fishers Bistro
In a country with such extensive coastlines it is not altogether surprising that there should be such a national love-fest with the fruits of the sea. The advent of seriously farmed versions, given the demand, is not altogether surprising either, but like most else in life there's no beating the real thing.

Fishers in the City
Fishers in the City is the centrally located sister restaurant to Fishers Bistro , and similarly specializes in seafood. Contemporary cuisine in relaxed and informal surroundings, excellent service and food is what Fisher's is best known for! This is amply demonstrated by dishes like steamed crab claws in Thai green curry sauce or deep fried monkfish in coriander tempura batter with and a cashew satay dipping sauce; though the less adventurous could opt for a whole grilled lemon or Dover sole with sunblushed tomato.
